What do we look for in the perfect dog food?
The Importance of Quality Ingredients
Choosing the right food for our furry companions is essential, and it begins with high-quality ingredients. When it comes to dog food, knowing that real chicken is the number one ingredient gives us peace of mind. The Blue Buffalo Wilderness Natural High-Protein Dry Food for Small Breed Adult Dogs has real chicken first, which means we’re starting off on the right paw.
What Makes Chicken So Great?
Chicken is not just a tasty protein; it provides the essential amino acids our dogs need for building strong muscles. We all want our pets to be healthy and energetic, and high-quality protein sources like chicken help achieve that.
No Meat By-Products
Another factor that we appreciate is that this dog food contains no chicken or poultry by-product meals. These by-products often contain lower-quality meat and can sometimes lead to issues with digestibility. With Blue Buffalo, we know we’re giving our dogs wholesome, tasty meals that are good for them.

High-Protein for High Energy
Why High Protein Matters
Small breed dogs often have high energy levels and fast metabolisms, so their nutritional needs differ from larger breeds. The Blue Buffalo Wilderness formula is designed specifically for small breeds and is packed with protein. High-protein dog food supports muscle development and meets their energetic lifestyle.
How Much Protein is Enough?
For adult small breed dogs, we generally want to look for a food that has at least 20-30% protein. Blue Buffalo exceeds this expectation, providing a diet that supports our pups’ active lives. To give you a better idea, let’s compare it to average protein contents from different dog foods.
| Dog Food Brand | Protein Content |
|---|---|
| Blue Buffalo Wilderness | 30% |
| Average Dry Dog Food | 20% |
| Generic Small Breed Food | 25% |
As you can see, Blue Buffalo stands out significantly, ensuring our small breeds are nourished adequately.
Immune System Support
LifeSource Bits
The unique blend of antioxidants, known as LifeSource Bits, is another standout feature of this dog food. These bits are specially formulated to support our dogs’ immune systems, making them vital for maintaining overall health.
Why Antioxidants Matter
Antioxidants help fight off free radicals in the body, which in turn can help maintain our dogs’ overall health. A strong immune system is crucial for preventing illnesses and ensuring our pups can enjoy their playful lives to the fullest.
Wholesome Ingredients We Can Trust
What Ingredients Are Included?
When we look at dog food, we want to avoid ingredients that aren’t beneficial. Blue Buffalo has no corn, wheat, or soy, which are often fillers in many dog foods. Instead, it focuses on natural ingredients that provide more nutrients.

For those of us who like to know what we’re feeding our dogs, here’s a look at some of the key ingredients in the Blue Buffalo Wilderness formula:

Knowing that these ingredients are chosen for their health benefits makes us feel better about what we’re feeding our furry friends.
Potential Allergens
It’s important for us to note that dogs can have allergies, just like humans. The absence of common allergens like corn, wheat, and soy in this formula is a significant advantage.

Physical Packaging Specs
While the digital version of the packaging provides clarity, the physical appearance may vary slightly. However, rest assured that the information contained within is accurate and matches the product.
Portion Control and Feeding Guidelines
How Much Should We Feed?
When we bring home a new bag of dog food, it’s crucial to follow the recommended feeding guidelines based on our dog’s weight and activity level. This information often helps us ensure that our little buddies are getting the right amount of nutrients without overeating.
Recommended Feeding Amounts
| Dog Weight | Daily Feeding Amount |
|---|---|
| 5-10 lbs | ½ – 1 cup |
| 10-20 lbs | 1 – 1½ cups |
| 20-30 lbs | 1½ – 2 cups |
Following these guidelines not only keeps our dogs fit but also promotes longevity and health.
Transitioning to Blue Buffalo
The Importance of a Gradual Transition
If we’ve been feeding our dogs different food, transitioning to Blue Buffalo can be done smoothly. A gradual transition over about a week gives their digestive systems time to adjust.
How to Transition
The best approach is to mix the existing food with the new Blue Buffalo formula over a week. Start with a 75% to 25% ratio of old to new food, gradually shifting to a complete serving of Blue Buffalo.
| Day | Old Food | Blue Buffalo |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
| Day 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
| Day 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
| Day 7 | 0% | 100% |
Making the switch gradual helps prevent any stomach upset or transition issues.
